The Microfinance Competence Centre (MCC) has been established within the PNG Institute of Banking and Business Management (IBBM) through the PNG-ADB Microfinance Project.

IBBM is an Association, incorporated under the PNG Associations Incorporation Act. Established in 1965, it provides extensive training and development services in banking, finance, business and management throughout PNG and the Pacific region.

The purpose of the MCC is to improve competence throughout the microfinance industry.

The MCC is structured in 4 units:

  • Training Unit
  • Marketing Development Unit
  • Industry Services Unit
  • Monitoring and Financing Unit.


The Marketing Development Unit provides the following consultancy services:

  • Downscaling initiatives
  • Linkages
  • MFI technical support
  • New MFI start-up
  • Product development.

The role of the Industry Services Unit is to:

  • Develop the PG National MFI network
  • Assist the Central Bank with the development of a full risk-based supervision system
  • Manage feasibility studies, sectorial research etc.
  • Market and develop the MCC in the Pacific Region.

The role of the Monitoring and Financing Unit is currently being defined to meet the Project’s requirements for administration of a Revolving Fund Facility.
